APEX, N.C. (WNCN) – The Wake County Sheriff’s Office is searching for the person who fatally shot a 17-year-old girl in her home near Apex.
The shooting happened just before 2:30 a.m. at a home in the 3800 block of Copperhead Road in Wake County.
Sheriff Gerald Baker said a family member found the girl lying on the floor. She was shot multiple times, according to Baker.
“Imagining, as a parent, you hear noises while you’re asleep. You come and discover your family member has been attacked,” Baker said.
Baker said the girl was taken to WakeMed and where she died. He called the shooting “tragic.”
Deputies and K-9 units, with help from the Cary Police Department, searched the woods around the property for the suspect. Neighbors said the home is about a mile down a private drive, Cooperhead Road, which isn’t far from U.S. 1.
“We did some tracking. That kind of gives us an idea of which direction (the) suspect could possibly have fled,” Baker said.
Officials said a person of interest has been identified but they have not been apprehended.
“We feel pretty sure we’ll have the person responsible soon,” Baker said.
The victim and person of interest knew each other before the shooting, the sheriff’s office said.
